About UsThe Global Water Initiative is a coalition of seven international organizations1 with a plan to change the landscape of water, sanitation and hygiene services in 13 countries in Central America, West Africa and East Africa. For a minimum of 10 years, these partners will address the challenges of providing long-term access to clean water and sanitation for homes and livelihoods, while promoting the protection and sustainable management of ecosystems and watersheds. The partner organizations focus on the needs of some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities including those living in arid and semiarid areas.

Each year, over $15 million is made available by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. “It is our objective to utilize and leverage the experience of our partners to create a flexible and spontaneous approach to providing poor communities access to safe drinking water. By building new constituencies, creating stronger alliances and engaging all stakeholders, it is our hope to create a new vision and an effective platform for change,” stated Howard Buffett, President of the Foundation.

The individual partners have extensive experience working with poor and vulnerable populations in the areas of water, sanitation and the environment. Yet the GWI provides an unprecedented opportunity to implement a more ambitious approach to a complex problem through collaboration and ongoing learning. By combining ideas, experiences and geographical reach, the partners will work with local organizations and agencies to create lasting change in the 13 countries.

The Howard G. Buffett Foundation funds water projects in 19 countries, but does not accept any unsolicited proposals.
